Black Prep School
Reflections of a Nurse on How Black Children Are Indoctrinated by the Penal System
There are other books about structural racism and the complex relationship that Blacks/African Americans have with the criminal justice system. However, Black Prep School draws on Nurse Miller’s experiences as a medical care provider to prisoners, a position which allowed him to know the incarcerated at their most vulnerable. Nurse Miller also draws on his early experiences in the nursing profession at an inner-city hospital that served primarily Blacks/African Americans. In Black Prep School, he reflects on the impact of early and frequent interactions with the penal system on the subconscious of Black families and children. Written in a frank and conversational style, Black Prep School seeks to sound an alarm about the destructiveness on black households of a lifestyle that centers within the penal system. This book highlights how multiple institutions work together to create generations who feel destined for a life of crime and years behind bars, in the same way that other groups feel destined for college and/or rewarding careers.
Book Reviews
This is an amazing book! It is very informative of what really happens to our generation of people

How wonderful of the author to take the time and energy to write such a remarkable book that opens a window into his world of prison nursing as well as the widespread, pervasive and long term affects on children who have to witness their parent in jail/prison. Nurse Miller helps us understand the reverberating intergenerational effects and trauma that prison life has on the children of prisoners. Perhaps it is part of the reason that the U.S.A. has the largest prison population in the world as well as one of the highest, if not the highest murder rate on the planet. Thank you Nurse Miller for this profound service to the community.

This book had me crying through the whole thing – it really moved me to think about a pipeline of kids that haven’t got a chance

A great read! informative, enlightening, thought-provoking. Nurse Miller sheds light on the ugly underbelly of American society, told from the vantage point of a medical professional. His decades-long career has put him in the trenches, on the battlefield with America’s marginalized and dispossessed. This compassionate, first-hand account of the effects of centuries of systemic racism on a people’s mental and physical health, on their dreams and aspirations, on their very self-worth should soften all but the most reprobate of hearts. This book should be a call to action for all Americans who TRULY want this country to espouse the ideals of freedom, justice, and equality that it has been proclaiming for nearly 300 years.

I enjoyed reading Black Prep School. Nurse Miller has more than enough stories to write about, based on his life as a registered nurse and his great insights. He has great writing skills
